The Dalgona coffee craze is strong

You will totally understand why once you've made this creamy and delightful beverage.

The way that I make it totally reminds me of a fabulous Vietnamese iced coffee.

What is Dalgona coffee?

Why are we all obsessing over it? It actually originated in Korea being called Korean coffee, and it's also known as Frappe Coffee (Greek), Beaten Coffee (Indian) and is known in several other cultures.

I first saw it on Tiktok (@imhannahcho) a few weeks ago.

It's perfectly sweet but strong, which makes it the best pick me up first thing in the morning.

I recommend splitting it into 2-3 servings because there is a lot of caffeine in this recipe (about 6 cups of coffee worth!)

What ingredients do you need?

The list is short and sweet.

You will just need: instant coffee, sugar, and boiling water.

You can mix it into your favorite non-dairy milk, but my recommendation is using Oatly if you can get your hands on it. It's my favorite oat milk... you cannot beat the taste.

However, I've also had this with unsweetened vanilla almond milk, and it's delicious that way as well.

What can I use to whip the coffee?

You can use a manual whisk to make this coffee, but it will take a lot of stamina. The key is to go back and forth/side-to-side whisking in a zig zag motion instead of just making large circles. It can take anywhere from 8-15 minutes.

You can alternatively use a handheld frother, which is my favorite method. It produces a lava-like consistency that I am absolutely in love with.

Lastly, feel free to use a stand mixer or electric mixer. It will produce the thickest dalgona in the shortest amount of time.

More Questions Answered

Can I use a low carb sweetener instead?

Absolutely. Just make sure that it is granulated, i.e. Swerve or Lakanto.

Can I store it for later use?

Yes, throw it in an airtight container in the refrigerator and use it the next day.

Can I use matcha?

Absolutely. I have a recipe for whipped matcha!

How to Make Dalgona (Whipped Coffee)

In a small mixing bowl, add instant coffee and coconut sugar.

Pour in 3 tablespoons of boiling water and stir everything together.

Using either a manual whisk, handheld frother or electric mixer, whisk everything together for 2-3 minutes until the color turns a golden brown and the mixture thickens up quite a bit.

You can alternatively do this in the bowl of a stand mixer or in a medium bowl with an electric mixer.

If you'd like the coffee mixture to quickly melt into the milk, stop whisking/whipping once you see trails in the coffee mixture.

If you'd like a thicker coffee, only add 2 tablespoons of hot water and whisk/mix for an extra 1-2 minutes.

Fill a glass with a handful of ice cubes. Pour in ½ cup of non-dairy milk.

Add whipped coffee on top and give everything a nice and aggressive stir until well incorporated.

Expert Tips & Tricks

This will make (3) small servings because 2 tablespoons of instant coffee is equivalent to roughly 6 cups of coffee.

You can use Four Sigmatic mushroom coffee mix as well. Instead of 2 tablespoons, use 1.5 tablespoons of this mix.

Refined sugar can be substituted for coconut sugar, and the end result will be a bit sweeter.

This can be stored in the refrigerator overnight in an airtight container.

So good! Tastes like a fancy coffee shop drink but so easy that I can make at home. Worked great with oatly milk. I divided this into 2 large servings instead of 3 normal sized servings and it was perfect for both portions.5 stars

Made this with a KitchenAid (lazy 😂) and Trader Joe’s oat milk. It was super easy and my husband kept smacking his lips and saying “DEElightful!”, which makes it a winner in my book! Thanks for the easy to follow tutorial Monica!!5 stars
