Frozen Berry Yogurt Ice Cream (For Kids)

These Frozen Berry Yogurt Ice Cream Popsicles make it OK to eat dessert every single day. Made with just 4 real food ingredients blended together and frozen into portable little ice pops - even the kids are going to have a hard time understanding why you say 'yes' to the 'Can I have another one?' question 🙂

Mixed Berry Frozen Yogurt

We make Yogurt and Berry Popsicles often. OK, in truth, some days they don't quite make it into to the Popsicle mold, but rather end up in a bowl for a quick dessert or snack. But when they do make it to the freezer, it's a good day. 

This is one of those recipes that I recommend to families looking for easy, beginner clean eating ideas. It's a healthy, high calcium, easy to make dessert that even the fussiest of children don't mind. And even better, there's no ice-cream maker needed to create your creamy berry mixture!

Fussy Kid Tip

As a side note, if your child is a little picky about the food they eat then blend your berries first before adding the yogurt. It results in a smoother texture Popsicle without obvious lumpy fruit bits so it should pass the kid scrutiny test 🙂

DIY Popsicle Molds

You can find popsicle molds pretty much everywhere (if I'm prepping for a special occasion like parties or play dates, I like to use the ones with the wooden stick, but if it's just for my kids at home, then I use these because my kids know that I like to get them back with their matching lids :).

If you don't have a Popsicle mold at home, then don't stress, you can use this little DIY kitchen hack.

Pop cupcake paper liners or small paper cups into a 12 hole muffin tray (to hold them in place). Fill the cups/ liner with your ice cream mix and freeze for about an hour. Once they are a little firm, insert your wooden stick into each cup and then freeze until solid. Remove the paper up / liner before eating (I know that's obvious, but toddlers will eat anything)

Blending Frozen Yogurt Ice Cream

When you start prepping more food at home, your blender, or food processor quickly becomes your new best friend. It takes a recipe from a random bunch of ingredients to a meal in around 15 seconds flat. You don't need a fancy blender but you do need one with a little bit of grunt to avoid uneven lumps in your smoothies ore desserts.

I recommend getting one with nothing less than 1000 Watts of power. I have burned two blender engines as a result of low wattage, so I speak from experience.

Also, make sure it's big enough to suit your family size. I know that those cute little blenders look amazing on TV, but they are not practical for bigger families. You end up having to blend recipes in batches and that sucks.

Yogurt Ice Cream Additions

Back to my Yogurt and Berry Ice Cream treat .... It's super easy to change the flavor of this ice cream recipe too. You can buy a whole load of frozen fruits, so take your pick.

Simply use different types of fruit for a healthy vitamin c boost!

Some combinations we like are: 

• Mango and pineapple
• Raspberries and strawberries
• Banana and mango
• Peach and banana
• Kiwi fruit and mango
• Try adding a teaspoon of vanilla extract if it goes with your fruit choice

-->> The basic combination is two cups yogurt to three cups of fruit.

Recipe Notes

• If you find your popsicles get ice crystals forming on them, you can take a slightly longer way around to stop this. Instead of pouring your berry mix straight into the popsicle molds, pour it into a tub and give it a good mix after being in the freezer for an hour. Then, pour it into your molds and carry on freezing
• Leave your popsicles in the freezer until you need them. Being additive free they'll defrost and melt quickly, so eaten straight from the freezer is best

How To Make Frozen Berry Yogurt Ice Cream

Ingredients

• 2 Cups Greek Yogurt (full fat)
• 1 - 2 tablespoons honey or maple syrup (taste test as this will depend on the sweetness of your fruit. If fruit is sweet enough, you can leave this out all together)
• 1 cup frozen blueberries
• 2 cups frozen strawberries 

Instructions

1. Add yogurt, berries and honey to your blender. Blend until smooth, stop half way and scrape down the sides if needed. (I like to see a few berry chunks, but this is up to you. If your kids a fussy, see my fussy kid tip above). 
2. Pour into your Popsicle molds. 
3. Freeze for 3 hours until firm
4. Remove from mold and serve.
